BENJAMIN ESPY, DVM, DACT

Board Certified Theriogenologist Veterinarian
(Equine Reproduction, Fertility and Neonatal Specialist)

Dr. Benjamin Espy received a biology degree from Duke University in 1991. In 1996, he became a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University.

After completing a residency in Lexington, KY in 2005, Dr. Espy became recognized as a board certified specialist in equine reproduction, infertility, and neonatology.  During his career Dr. Espy has practiced equine medicine in Brenham, Texas, San Antonio, TX, and most recently in Lexington, KY at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute - a 42-doctor equine referral practice.  Dr. Espy attributes much of his respect for the intricacies of equine reproduction to his mentors Dr. Terry Blanchard and Dr. Dickson Varner at Texas A&M.  They are both recognized worldwide as leaders in the field of equine fertility.

In addition to being licensed to practice acupuncture, he is the past chairman of the American Association of Equine Practitioners Owner Education Committee, served on the AAEP Board of Directors, the Board of Directors for the American College of Theriogenology ( www.theriogenology.org), and on the King Ranch Board of Directors. Dr. Espy has also served as the AAEP liaison for the Board of Directors of the Texas Equine Veterinary Association.  He serves on the ethics and grievance committee for the Texas Veterinary Medical Examiners.

Dr. Espy currently practices almost exclusively on professional rodeo timed event horses and because of this, is licensed in four (4) states.  He provides for the veterinary care and breeding of 200 bucking horses in Colorado.  He is the veterinarian for the Percherons owned by Young Living Essential Oils in Mona, Utah that won the 2019 National Champion 6-hitch and 8-hitch, and has been the head of the Veterinary Services for the last 24 years at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo.  During this specific show Dr. Espy controls the movement and care of 60,000 individual animals over the 18 days of the show.  This also includes 25,000 junior stock show entries, the largest junior stock show in the world.  Since 2011, Dr. Espy has been a consultant on the Animal Care and Welfare Committee for the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA). He was a finalist for the 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 PRCA Veterinarian of the Year.

Representative of his currency with the literature and respect among his peers Dr. Espy was named to the Educational Program Committee of the AAEP and since 2015 has been in charge of the reproductive lecture content during the annual convention. The work of the EPC consists primarily of formulating, organizing, and presenting a variety of continuing education programs for the AAEP.

He has also been an editor for the magazine The Horse since 2008.
